How to Create a Gift Registry for Any Occasion

Somewhere along the way, we decided that gift registries were only acceptable for weddings. That is a shame, because they solve the exact same problem at every other event where people give gifts: nobody knows what to buy.

When a Registry Makes Sense

Any event where multiple people will bring gifts. Birthdays. Baby showers. Housewarmings. Graduations. Holidays. Even a kid's first day of school (teachers always need supplies). If people are going to spend money on you anyway, give them direction.

Step 1: Pick a Platform

Step 2: Add Items at Every Price Point

This is the most important rule. Include items from $10 to whatever your most expensive pick is. The range gives every gift giver a comfortable option. If your cheapest item is $75, some people will skip the registry entirely and freelance a gift.

Step 3: Be Specific

Color, size, model number, and a direct link to buy it. The less work your gift giver has to do, the more likely they are to use the registry. Every missing detail is an opportunity for them to guess wrong.

Step 4: Share It Naturally

Add the link to your event invitation, your social media bio, or both. If someone asks what you want, send them the link with a quick "I put a list together to make it easy." That is it. Nobody will think you are being demanding.

Step 5: Keep It Updated
